Maruti Suzuki A Star to Replace Alto in 2008

A-Star was showcased earlier this year at the Delhi Auto Expo. It will take it to showrooms in India around Diwali by October 2008. However, the production of A-Star is a lot different than the aggressive concept that was displayed. It is a four-door small car unlike the two-door model shown and incorporates a more modest front with simpler headlamps and front grille design.
The latest generation K-series engine from Maruti will make its entry into India through the A-Star. We can expect a 1.0 litre three cylinder engine to be the first option. Later, a 1.2 litre engine which is provided in the Maruti Splash available overseas might also be on offer. This will put the A-Star in competition with the i10 Kappa in the domestic market. A diesel option may be on the cards by 2010.
Maruti is also in talks with FIAT for a two cylinder engine which might of lesser capacity for their upcoming models. The expected price of the A-Star will be around Rs 3-4 Lakh. The base model should be competitively priced at a sub-3lakh rupees price tag
